Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Guy Beresford's excavations at Goltho (see 88/733), which led him to argue a date as early as AD 850 for a fortified manor, prompt a recall of R A Brown's warning about claiming pre-Norman origins for castles. Some of Beresford's case for a pre-Viking date for Goltho 3 is based on rather shaky historical criteria, and as the pottery is well dated to the 10th century that date is to be preferred to the mid-9th century one. | ||||||
