Abstract:
Comment on P Andrews (ed), The coins and pottery from Hamwic (1988, see 89/577): it is notable that the frequency of the imported pottery (N French) nearly matches that of the imported coin (Frisian and Danish). Rather than deducing an actual Frisian presence in Hamwic, perhaps we should see the coins as being spent by Quentovic (eg) traders who had acquired them from Frisia but found them unacceptable currency in France. The volume as a whole is important as a contribution to understanding the changing rhythms and patterns of trade.
