Abstract:
Bradley reviews Renfrew's Archaeology and language (1988) and Mallory's In search of the Indo-Europeans (1989: see 89/1097). The authors find themselves on opposing sides, and both are persuasive, so the debate is on the success or failure of archaeological interpretation itself. If neither archaeology nor language can be conclusive maybe we need a new source of evidence. Bray reviews The pastmasters (ed G Daniel & C Chippindale, 1989) (89/914), expressing some disappointment at the bland presentation, and reminding us that Childe was there before the Young Turks. Sabloff, reviewing Courbin's What is archaeology? (89/925), finds this an unsuccessful (though worthwhile) attempt to turn the clock back to before 1960.
