Brief report on the first International Symposium on Dendrochronology in Northern Europe, held at Greenwich in July 1977. Speakers reported their work on the establishment of chronologies for various parts of Britain and N Ireland, N and E Germany, Scandinavia and the Alps. Experiments with X-ray densitometry as an alternative to ring-width in the study of past climates are proceeding, and factors other than weather which may influence tree growth were discussed. |
