Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
This note publishes in full for the first time a transcript of a manuscript written by William Galloway in association with his display at the 1883 International Fisheries Exhibition in London of the finds from Caisteal nan Gillean, a shell midden site on the island of Oronsay in the Inner Hebrides. An introduction outlines what is known of the manuscript, and its significance. A report on the excavations by Galloway never materialised other than summary accounts by Symington Grieve within his own publications, which rather gloss over Galloway's role, and descriptions, primarily of the finds, by Joseph Anderson, Keeper of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland's museum. The manuscript presented here is remarkable in showing that Galloway had a very clear understanding of the nature of the midden site and its ecological setting and of the artefactual and ecofactual remains unearthed. The recovery and subsequent description and interpretation of the latter place Galloway's work very much at the forefront of such archaeological work at the time. The manuscript is presented as an appendix with explanatory notes, with the original 1883 exhibition catalogue entry reproduced as a separate appendix. LD | ||||
