The abstract describing the content of the publication or report
Abstract:		 [NZ 0516] Introductory history and topography of castle and planted town alongside. Excavation of the W bailey showed a bank supporting timbers for a fighting platform on the thin stone S curtain wall (c 1135?) with a clay-bonded revetment; a rectangular stone building had a yard beyond. Further buildings were added to the E in 13th century, when a stone-lined well was dug through the bank (and deliberately fouled in 16th century). The bailey was cleared and abandoned early in 14th century when a wet moat was cut further W, controlled by a stone dam and sluice beside a new drawbridge platform, with a latrine block and angle tower to the S. The moat was soon neglected but the angle tower was refurbished in later 15th century. D F R
