Abstract:
TR 326419. The natural SE/NW chalk slope had been scraped before the keep footings were built in the 1180s, and then the site was partly levelled up and a lower terrace made inside the line of the inner curtain wall. A detailed survey of the structures attached to the wall revealed a hall and chamber-block together with another block (with grisaille glass), remodelled c 1240 and again a century later within the NE side, the flanking towers having single arrowslits and garderobes, unlike the larger towers on the rest of the curtain, against which stood a 14th century hall. Heavy piers were added to support torsion artillery on the NE curtain in 14th century. Fillings from a cistern and garderobes here and on the SW outer wall included shoes, purses and considerable quantities of pottery of c 1300, when much refitting is documented. Alterations to the approaches to the Constable's Gate revealed traces of Tudor or later outer gateways. DFR
