Abstract:
(In German.) A summary of current ignorance. The original building plan is tolerably well understood; it involved curtain from Newcastle-upon-Tyne to Bowness-on-Solway, with milecastles and turrets. The first revision added forts, Vallum and Wallsend extension. With twelve crossing-points (against seventy-seven in plan 1) it implies closer control arising from serious military problems. More attention to the subsequent history of Hadrian's Wall is necessary. Progress requires independent studies of individual sites, since it can no longer be assumed that all have the same history. The date and extent of the destruction usually assigned to AD 197 are questioned. Further work should be concentrated on the forts and on the Cumberland coast, whose milecastles and turrets should be numbered with the Wall series, to which they belong. Recent work at Housesteads has revealed the Hadrianic vicus S of the Vallum, emphasising the economic importance of the frontier, and has shown important changes in fort-planning in 4th cent. Other fort excavations would surely add to our knowledge of this. Au
