Excavations during 2004 re-located what appeared to be a mass grave pit, first found in 1930, in which were found the remains of fourteen individuals, two of which were fully excavated and found to be male, both with indications having died as a result of several blows to the head. Radiocarbon dating provided dates of AD 430--640 (with 59% probability of being between AD 530--620) and AD 530--660 (with 51% probability of being between AD 595--645), making it likely that the mass grave was associated with the Battle of Chester, c. AD 613. The central section of an inscribed Roman tombstone was also found. Work at the site of the Roman quay revealed matching pieces of a sculpture from a funerary monument depicting two female figures, found in previous seasons' work. | |||||||||||
