Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
In considering the extent of tribal territory in pre-Roman and Roman Wales, textual sources are of varying reliability and usefulness, and archaeological evidence is extremely scanty. Some clues are however provided by the siting of Roman forts in relation to the tribes they were subduing. For instance, the area of SW Wales which is free of forts suggests the territory of a friendly tribe, the Demetae. The Deceangli occupied Flintshire, but the extent of their territory beyond that can only be suggested. The Ordovices probably occupied most of mid-Wales and the March; the strict policing of this area in the Flavian period was much relaxed by the late 3rd cent. The Silures, with the lower reaches of the Wye as their probable E boundary, may have occupied a strip running to the Cardiganshire coast, and the forts in their territory were virtually abandoned during 2nd cent. Appended is a translation of Ptolemy's evidence for the region S of Hadrian's Wall. | |||||||
