Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Discovery of RB burials led to the identification of a hitherto unknown small town, ?Vindomi of the Antonine Itinerary. About 0.37ha or 2.6% of the site has been examined, but the finds constitute the largest corpus published from a Roman small town. Structures, mostly of late 3rd/4th centuries, include only two masonry buildings, another 22 being of timber. Ribbon development along the roads is inferred, and the total size must be at least 8ha, perhaps 14ha, with a population of 2000-4000. Economy is discussed in relation to geographically defined 'service areas'; in addition to agriculture and small-scale metalworking, pottery from Alice Holt and Farnham may have been marketed. Also a ?mansio; ?votive deposits of native type; relatively unromanized. | |||||||
