Abstract:
Treated here are a parcel of three-line pennies from a grave; a new variety of sceat; an Alfred penny; and two Late Saxon pennies. The mass burial uncovered is probably that of Viking Great Army soldiers succumbing in 873-4. Other coins in graves seem to show the reappearance, via Scandinavian influence, of an earlier custom of depositing coins. Some could be casual losses arising from use of the churchyard as a market-place. Appended is a report on a denier of Pepin the Short from Bere Regis, Dorset.
