Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
(An extended version of an earlier paper - see 88/1978.) Beresford's dating for Goltho fortified manor is too early -the pottery is 10th century and that must date the site. Evidence from Raunds is suggesting that the English fortified manor owed its genesis to the struggles of the West Saxons against the Danes; it was the Viking stimulation of the Danelaw economy which made the Saxons determined to regain this territory. The evidence does not sustain an 'Anglo-Saxon feudalism' at this date. | |||
