[SO 2872]. The origins and street plan of the town are discussed: a late 12th century plantation on an earlier settlement is likely. Parts of only two medieval buildings survive, one with a cruck-truss having cusped upper members, possibly late 15th century, the other building retaining part of an arched braced collar with cusped trefoils (not certainly a cruck). Since Knighton was more prosperous than Presteigne it underwent more 17th century rebuilding. Remains of these later structures are plentiful and fit generally into Brooksby's typology, some dozen are described, with illustrations. | ||||||
