a small excavation revealed extensive occupation deposits in an unbroken sequence from the thirteenth century to the present day. Occupation from perhaps as early as the eleventh century can only be hinted at, as the lower levels on the site were not excavated. The occupants seem to have devoted considerable effort to raising the ground level almost throughout the entire occupation, and as a result most of the evidence comes from imported and dumped soil layers. An infilled watercourse, at the edge of a dip or terrace in the underlying chalk, adds to the evidence from nearby excavations of several early channels between the foot of the chalk rise and the present course of the Thames.
