Report on two excavation campaigns at Croxden Abbey, a Cistercian house founded in 1179, some of the buildings of which continued in use as a farm after the abbey was dissolved in 1538. The 1956--7 excavations and recording were undertaken prior to consolidation of the ruins, and focused on the north transept and east end of the church, and a building to the south-east of the abbey complex. The 1975--7 excavations concentrated on the area between this and another building to the east of the complex, westwards to the latrine block and north as far as the chapter house. The excavations support earlier identification of the building as the abbey infirmary, and suggest that these were joined to the dormitory in the main complex by an infirmary cloister. It was suggested that the building identified in the earlier excavations was the abbot's chamber, although these roles might have been reversed. A summary of supporting documentary evidence is provided, including indications of the abbey economy, activities servicing which may have been undertaken in the walled yard between the two buildings, where hearths and hard standings were identified, although these may have been post-dissolution. A complex water management system of stone-lined drains was also identified by the excavations. Specialist reports include | |||||||||||
