Abstract:
The first purpose-built archaeological field research centre in the country was opened at the Nene Valley Research Committee's headquarters. Fieldwork continued at Fengate, where a house and industrial area was found linked to the BA field system, and where the excavation of the thirty-house EIA village was completed. At Ashton a Roman settlement of stone-founded workshops, their yards and roadways was investigated together with a well containing a late Roman lead tank with Chi-Rho monogram. Car Dyke is now seen as a catchwater drain. Further progress on understanding Saxon settlement in the area was made at Orton Longueville and Werrington, while a medieval building and pottery sequence was uncovered in Peterborough (Bridge Street). Regular air reconnaissance revealed many new sites in the 1976 drought.
