Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
A recent inscription from Piercebridge (Co Durham), recording detachments of Leg VI and of the army of the two Germanies under a centurion of II Augusta, raises questions about conditions in N Britain under Caracalla. It reinforces other epigraphic evidence that the frontier area was troubled after the assassination of Geta, although there is no archaeological evidence for a destruction. Some of the units which vowed allegiance to Caracalla had probably given some previous trouble; the troops from Germany may have been brought by a new governor (?M Antonius Gordianus - here by AD 216) to infuse greater loyalty. Perhaps the presence of a centurion from II Augusta implies that the consular governor of Britannia Superior was concerned with the action requiring these reinforcements in the neighbouring province; but what was happening at Piercebridge remains unknown.
