Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The assumption that service in the Rome cohorts as ranker or centurion conferred specific advantages in status and promotion is questioned. Patterns are distinguished: all legionary rankers and all cornicularii of the Rome prefects, some evocati and some directly-commissioned men went to the legionary centurionate alone; some evocati went direct to the Rome centurionates, where they might stay or go on to the legionary centurionate; some directly-commissioned men went to the urban and praetorian centurionates after service in the legionary centurionate. Service in the Rome centurionates does not seem to have conferred any automatic advantage; those who had served in the ranks at Rome did well, but so did the men from the legions and directly-commissioned men. Appendices deal with possible evocati from the legions; trecenarius and princeps castrorum, the former explained as the praetorian equivalent of a legionary primus ordo; and a suggested date under Commodus for the command of symmachiarii by G Sulpicius Ursulus.
