Abstract:
From the fine Samuel Lysons (1762-1834) drawings via the highly inventive William Fowler (1761-1832) versions to the arrival of the camera we now see a return to the detailed coloured drawing, this time with each cube represented on millimetre-squared paper. Photographs can help, but oblique views are no substitute for the on-site drawing, which is also preferred for publication purposes.
