Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
An international committee of experts strongly affirm certain principles which they think should govern acquisitions of museum material, and their first draft is presented for comment by member museums. For instance, there must be full and satisfactory documentation relating to the origins of any object acquired (including gifts) and no object should be acquired unless it fits into the stated programme of the museum concerned (though this could include exchange-material). No object should be acquired under suspicion of its illegal removal from its country of origin. Research expeditions should be conducted according to the laws of the host country, and proper documentation about the information recovered made available within an agreed period to the host country. Every endeavour should be made to respect ecological associations of groups of objects. Appended to this draft are reprints of the UNESCO draft on the prevention of illicit trade in cultural property, and of the statement of ethical principles by the University of Pennsylvania Museum (on this see also Antiquity, 44, 1970, 171-2). |
