Abstract:
Sixty examples are catalogued and some sub-types added to the fourfold 1955 classification. Type I, light green or colourless glass, is of 3rd-4th century date and produced at Köln, its distribution limited to the left bank of the Rhine and some Baltic coastal sites. Type II began as a late Roman invention at end 4th century, continuing to mid-6th for Germanic tastes. Type III, similar to I, had a later start, running after 550 to early 7th century and produced on the upper Rhine. Type IV, shorter than III and untwisted, was made in Italy where advanced technology allowed bright colours, two-way feathered decoration etc; date late 6th and early 7th centuries. (Note: this number of J Glass Stud is a Festschrift for D B Harden)
