Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
On the assumption that studies of non-Domesday England may shed more light on the pre-Conquest settlement pattern and its effect on Norman settlement, evidence from Cumbria is examined. Early feudal Cumbria was characterized by a very high proportion of compact estates, and appears to preserve features seen also in Wales where it is known that Norman colonization adapted itself to extant territorial patterns. Hence a 'Celtic' pattern underlies Cumbrian feudal settlement. |
