Literary and archaeological evidence suggests that table silver was widely available to the wealthy by 4th century at latest. Although samian/Arretine/sigillata wares were much used, they never seriously rivalled the glass or metal vessels they imitated; in cargoes, for instance, they were incidental to amphorae-borne foods and metal ingots. Even in peripheral areas like Britain, pottery was not particularly highly regarded except perhaps among the poor. | ||||||||
