Abstract:
There is a need to re-examine Clapham's arguments for assigning the earliest Anglo-Saxon belfry towers to the 10th century. Such a dating would crowd into a short period of 150 years not only the three consecutive forms of double belfry window but also the single type which probably preceded them. It also clashes with the apparent early 9th century dating of the triangular-headed windows at Barnack. Clapham had concluded that the bell-tower was only introduced into Italy in the 9th century and that no surviving example in France antedated the 10th century: Hubert's work has since shown that towers, containing several bells, are known in France from the early 8th century, and may be traced back in that country to the early 5th century. It is not, however, necessary to suppose English imitation of western European practices, for such towers as those of Wilfrid's 7th century church at Hexham may have been directly inspired by buildings in the same eastern Mediterranean areas which influenced early Northumbrian sculpture.
