The arguments for and against excavating more of the barrow cemetery at Sutton Hoo provide a classic example of ethical debate in archaeology. There are sound academic reasons for needing to know more about the site and its setting, and there is also some damage by rabbits and looters. However, some hold that such precious sites should be left intact indefinitely, or at least until vastly improved excavation techniques are available and the last round of Sutton Hoo work has been properly digested. |
