Abstract:
In terms of chronology, closely dated pottery sequences need examination to determine the shape of their frequency curves and establish the parameters within which they vary. The nature of residuality must be understood; and the use of tpq based on pottery dating is rarely appropriate. Measurable variation between assemblages is shown to be influenced by four groups of factors, three chronological and one chorological (eg fashion, degree of preservation, residuality, and social differentiation).
