Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
\r\nOverview of the The Stanbury Hill Project that focusses on the Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age landscape of Bingley Moor, which is characterised by a concentration of prehistoric rock art, over 20 possible Early Bronze Age burial or clearance cairns, several lines of possible prehistoric walling or boundaries, and findspots of flint tools. Survey in summer 2010 identified 16 carved rocks, 23 possible rock alignments, 26 possible cairns and 71 pieces of World War II ordnance. Two excavation seasons in 2010 and 2011 focused on two clearance cairns, a possible wall or boundary, a possible Bronze Age roundhouse and the site of a cup-and-ring-marked rock. The latter represented the first excavation of a carved rock site in Yorkshire. The wider context of the rock art at the site is discussed with reference to its location within the landscape, relationship to archaeological and natural features, and possible ritual significance. |
