Abstract:
This article gives an outline of investigations undertaken as part of the community-led Hidden Heritage project, for which Northlight Heritage provided professional archaeological support. The project focused on an area between Arrochar and Tarbet in the west of Scotland, looking for evidence for a 13th century battle and subsequent plundering and burning by Vikings, as well as researching the wider heritage of the area. Stages of work included desk-based research and aerial photograph analysis, followed by targeted geophysical survey and a walkover survey. Four areas were then chosen for short excavations, revealing evidence ranging from prehistoric flints to structural remains and pottery at an early 19th century settlement. In addition, at a monument known as the 'witches ring' at Stuckdhu the main enclosure was interpreted as part of an 18th to 19th century designed landscape. LD
