Fieldwork and excavation mostly in Perthshire and Argyll led to the identification of considerable numbers of slag heaps and hearths belonging to the early ironworking industry in Scotland. The bowl type of hearth was used for smelting bog iron, and the resultant slag was piled into either circular or "crag and tail" long heaps.
