The urban church of lowland Britain died in the course of the 5th cent with the official and commercial elite it served: the Celtic lands around the Irish sea were converted in the course of the 5th and 6th cents. The archaeological material in SW Scotland is examined in the light of the history and organisation of the Celtic church as it is known from the scanty historical records of the area and as it can be inferred from the richer Welsh sources. The impact of the Northumbrian advance and the Norse settlement is assessed, as is the systematic organisation of the lesser churches towards the parochial system of the full Middle Ages. Finally there is a discussion of the schools of sculpture in the area in the 10th and 11th cents (see also 69/373). RNB | |||||||||
