Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
[TU 797714.] This entire Anglo-Saxon village provides undisturbed structures, many animal bones for economic information, and an association with at least one cemetery nearby. More than half of the 5½-acre site has so far been examined to reveal Mesolithic, Neolithic, EIA and RB episodes, as well as the Saxon phase spanning early 5th to mid-7th centuries. The thirty-four sunken huts examined so far show varying functions and, in the earlier phase, are roughly grouped around three small halls. Those huts with three posts at each end are mostly earlier than those with a single post at each end. Steps were absent. One hut contained many loomweights resting on a burnt plank floor, and several others had storage or midden space under a raised floor. The 12,000 sherds recovered are mostly simple plain forms, usually with smoothed or burnished surfaces; but there are faceted-angled pots of early 5th century and stamped sherds by the "Lackford-Illington potter. Many Roman coins, mostly of 4th century, pose an interesting enigma. | ||||||||||||||||||||
