Abstract:
A long-term programme whose objectives are to investigate and observe the early history of the settlement and to trace the developments to the final manor house complex. The two areas of excavation were confined to the moated area measuring 51m x 37m; the western moated wall probably dated on excavated evidence alone to the mid-fifteenth century, and the large central cellar with a compatible date. However, there is evidence of a drainage ditch with a possible association with an earlier hall. The brickwork is examined, as are the finds of pottery and animal remains.
