Abstract:		 Reports work undertaken to convert the former custodian's cottage into a museum. Ramps were built to allow disabled access and in view of the archaeologically sensitive nature of their location they were constructed by members of Carlisle Archaeological Unit. The remains of demolished walls and a pipe-bowl dating to c. 1660--80 were discovered, which may indicate clearing in advance of the construction of a garden, known from historical records to have been undertaken during the 1660s by Lady Anne Clifford.
