Abstract:
This note aims to draw attention to the existence of a little-known report on geophysical survey work within Carlisle Cathedral Close, and to publish the data about possible pre-Norman structures. Although traces of archaeological activity were seen in all six of the areas surveyed and elements of structural remains were found in three, in the main the results were fragmentary and difficult to interpret. The site within the gardens behind nos. 3 and 6 The Abbey was the exception. In the context of what is known about the influence of the Roman street pattern on the early town, it is suggested that the features here belong to a period of activity predating the creation of the Norman priory.
