Abstract:		 The Roman outpost fort of Bewcastle is unusual, being hexagonal in plan and situated in a non-defensive position to the north of Hadrian's Wall. This report on geophysical survey work carried out in 2000, 2002 and 2003 examines the interior of the fort and comments on the apparent lack of a vicus and other features surrounding the site, including any evidence for agricultural activity. The paper puts the survey in context by summarising activity dating from other periods in the environs of the fort, and noting some of the findings of 20th-century fieldwork at the fort itself.
