Abstract:
The Tortie Stone is largely covered in cup-and-ring marks and was discovered in 1987 possibly embedded in a turf mound or surrounded by accumulated cairn material. On the fell opposite a large glacial erratic was discovered which also exhibits a series of artificial surface markings. Excavation could not date the former with certainty, although a Late Neolithic to EBA date is likely. The Tortie Stone is thought to have originally stood in an upright position and fallen at a later date with the accumulated material surrounding it having gathered after that. The second stone's decorations are noted.
