Abstract:
In the light of earlier fieldwalking and aerial survey which had produced quantities of Roman pottery and indications of ditches and enclosures, exploratory work revealed more pottery and a cobbled surface. There are reports on `The pottery' (9--11), `Bronze objects (level III)' (11), `Iron objects' (11), and `The bones' by Anna Fernyhough (11--13). Two smaller investigations produced a patch of grey earth with some evidence of burnt wood, and coins. The whole is thought to represent a farmstead with a cobbled yard established after AD~175 and abandoned circa the early-fourth century AD. There were quantities of animal bone along with pottery wasters and iron slag nodules indicating a kiln and ironworking site somewhere in the vicinity.
