Abstract:
During 1994--5 excavations were carried out during a period of major building works within the city centre. The three main sites, Bene't Court, St Edward's Passage and the rear of the Bath Hotel yielded large amounts of pottery. Much of this pottery, which was found mainly in pit fills, is dateable to the twelfth-thirteenth centuries and of Saxo-Norman type, namely St Neots, Thetford and Stamford Wares. Also found were fifteenth and early sixteenth-century Orange Sandy Wares. There are many similarities with well-dated material from Denny Abbey. Many of the properties in the area belonged to Anglesey Abbey and it is thought that the upheaval in the wake of the Dissolution and the changes in land ownership may account for the large pottery deposits.
