Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
This paper presents the results of the first-phase archaeological evaluation fieldwork implemented for the A14 Ellington to Fen Ditton project, undertaken by the Cambridge Archaeological Unit in 2009-10. This very large-scale exercise involved more than 20km of trenching wherein almost 720 features were recorded and 11,425 artefacts recovered. The paper principally serves to 'signpost' the project's rich archives, although the findings at 23 individual sites are summarised. This is followed by a discussion focusing on settlement and landscape variation along the route. Along the north-western length, all periods from the Mesolithic/Neolithic to Saxon times were represented. By contrast, the project's southern clayland sites were all essentially of Iron Age and/or Romano-British date. LD | |||||||||||
