Abstract:
[SK 1882]. The fifth season's work concentrated on the Period I praetorium, buildings south of the via principalis, and a late causeway across the SE defences. Period IIb is now seen to represent a complete reconstruction in stone, not just a modification, of the main buildings at least. Limits of the Pd I praetorium are not yet established. A Period IIA timber granary roofed with local stone tiles was rebuilt in stone during IIB (Severus?) and demolished for a flimsier structure in Period III. The section across the defences showed that the three ditches had filled by early 4th century, when a pebbled surface, partly of pitched stone and provided with a central drain, was laid across them, probably for the cavalry component of the late (Constantinian?) fort. A major stocktaking of past work on the site, especially of unpublished records is now needed.
