Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Reports investigation of a chance discovery on a spur-like section of a river terrace of the Derwent. Further survey failed to locate other burials. However, evaluation trenches produced artefacts spanning the Late Mesolithic to the modern period. An important Meso flint assemblage was discovered, along with evidence for medieval cultivation and manuring. The report is followed by further detail in: `Appendix 1: the excavations' (37--41); `Appendix 2: the cremated bone' by Jacqueline McKinley (41--3); `Appendix 3: charcoal, plant material and radiocarbon dating' (43--6) including `Charcoal' by Rowena Gale (43--5); `Appendix 4: the small finds' (46--60) includes `The collared urn' by Pauline Beswick (46--8), `The copper-alloy knife-dagger' (48--50), `Segmented bone beads' (50--1), `Bone pins' (51), and `Other worked bone' (51--2) all by Julien Parsons, `The pottery sherds' by Pauline Beswick (53--6), and `The lithics' by Andrew Myers (56--60). | ||||||||||||||||||
