Abstract:
A detailed account of archaeological investigations by Trent & Peak Archaeological Trust in 1993 and 1994 in advance of road construction (Derby southern bypass between Hilton and the M1). The new road cut through numerous features associated with first millennium BC activity including a curvilinear boundary ditch, perhaps forming part of a large ridge-top enclosure, a possible ditched enclosure, two approximately parallel pit alignments, scattered pits and postholes and a locally rare example of a LBA/EIA post-built round-house. Several features which may relate to a nearby RB settlement were also recorded. An unexpected concentration of Early Mesolithic flintwork provides rare evidence for activity from the period in this area. Other artefacts, associated with first millennium BC domestic activity, include LBA, EIA & LIA pottery, fragments of `stony VCP' briquetage, fired clay, heat-affected stones, querns and rubbing stones. Small quantities of RB sherds were also recovered. Pollen, charred plant remains and leaf sub-fossils from features on the site, together with limited insect remains, have added to knowledge of the first millennium BC environment and agricultural economy of the Middle Trent Valley. There are specialist reports on: `Flint, chert, quartzite and polished stone artefacts' by D Garton & J Brown (106--15); `Palaeolithic artefacts' by R H Jacobi & D Garton (115--16); `Iron Age saddle quern and pebble tools' by R J Firman, D Knight & M E Wright (124--5); `Late Bronze Age and Iron Age pottery' by D Knight (125--8); `Vessel fabrics' by C S M Allen, D Knight & D F Williams (128--36); `Iron Age briquetage and miscellaneous fired clay' by D Knight (137); `Romano-British pottery' by R S Leary (137--9); `Palynology' (139--43), `Leaf subfossils' (143--4) and `Charred macrofossil' (144) all by C O Hunt; and `Insect remains' by M Greenwood (144--6).
