Description and history of a timbered building in Bridge Street, Chester, one of only two of its type still surviving at this location in the 1920s. Includes details of the family who occupied the building in the 17th century, its later ownership history, and an account of trading practices in early post-medieval Chester. A crypt beneath the Bridge Street building, rediscovered in 1839 and dated to the 13th century, is also described. Possible original purposes for the crypt are considered: use as a chapel has previously been dismissed but may be a possibility.
