Abstract:		 [NY 935640]. Another contribution to the debate about this building focuses on two issues: the problem of floor levels and the eastern entrances to the crypt. Line 'g' of Hodges' plan (contra Gilbert - see 75/3101) was originally an arcade and the great depth of its eastern foundation is due to the proximity of the crypt. Hodges' section and existing remains suggest that the Wilfridian nave-level was c 91-5cm below the present floor. There was a raised sanctuary over the crypt and probably also a raised western sanctuary as at Canterbury. Foundation 'h' is related to the eastern sanctuary and may have been an ambolsolea. Arguments are offered against Gilbert's case for changes in the south-eastern passage and his views on the relationship of the passages and the above-ground structure. Appendices discuss a newly discovered 18th century plan of the crypt, the 1870 restoration and the identification of St Peter's church. Au(adp)
