NY 953978; NT 913063. Gives a brief summary of basic forms of kiln and describes two that were used for corndrying at Grasslees (Elsdon) and Barrow Mill (Alwinton). In Northumberland such kilns were always of stone and stood free of the mill building, on a slope if possible (to facilitate access on two levels). Internally they were shaped like bowls or inverted cones: externally they were usually rounded. | ||
