NY 935640. The text of the Lanercost Chronicle does not imply that St Wilfrid's main church survived until 1296. Hodges' account of the building history of the nave was rested upon this false assumption and on other questionable premises. A re-examination of the evidence suggests that there were at least two phases of post-Conquest building on the site: the pre-Dissolution sequence of construction is thus more usual than previously envisaged.
