Abstract:
Compares the Wall geographically with its closest parallels in the NW provinces and with other artificial frontiers, and sets it in its 2nd century context. Factors taken into account include the situation Hadrian inherited, the strategic placing and construction methods of the other frontiers, the disposition of troops, and the situation beyond the frontiers (with much use of diplomacy for frontier control). After the Germanic incursions across the middle Danube, towns acquired their own defences and soldiers were once again billeted within them.
