Abstract:
Excavations isolated six phases of construction and occupation activity, ranging from the earliest primary turf and timber fort through to post-medieval and modern structures. The second phase, within the Roman fort, involved the erection of officers' quarters and other barrack blocks, with evidence of roadways (viae sagularis and vicinaria). Their continued development is evinced up to period four. Medieval occupation debris characterised period five, followed directly by post-medieval and modern structures including cobbled surfaces and a terrace of cottages. There are specialist reports on `The Roman pottery' by J N Dore (44--55), `The medieval and post-medieval pottery' by M Chard (55--7), `Coin report' R J Brickstock (57--62), `Small finds report' by M C Bishop (62--8), `Worked stone report' by J C N Coulston (68--71). Then there is `Environmental report: palaeobotanical evidence' by J P Huntley (71--4), followed by `Animal bone evidence' S Stallibrass (74--9), `Archaeomagnetic dating report' by M Noel (79--81). Finally, conclusions are presented and a bibliography provided.
