Abstract: |
Four earthworks, including a little-known one and another whose course is largely misunderstood, are considered in relation to the Roman roads and seen as part of two contemporary but opposing defensive systems dating to the two centuries following the end of Roman rule. They would be effective against cavalry, and the western pair (Fossditch and Bichamditch) are tentatively assigned to Anglo-Saxon settlers, the eastern pair (Panworth and Launditch) to the Late Roman population. |
